FAQ 14 – My new labrador puppy seems to be scared of water. She absolutely hates it when I try to give her a bath. As I am a keen duck hunter a dog that hates water is of no use to me. Should I give up now and get another puppy?

You should give up trying to bath her now! Why do you do this? If a dog has an initial aversion to water trying to give it a bath is the worst thing to do. I doubt if any of my gundogs had more than three or four baths each in their lifetimes – they only got that treatment if they were really muddy. One of them never liked a bath but loved swimming and retrieving from water. I had another one that would walk around a rain puddle but swim half a mile to retrieve a goose from a stormy midwinter sea.
